What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic machine that can receive, store, process, and output information. Computers come in many forms: desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and even smartphones are all types of computers.
Hardware – The Body of the Computer
Hardware refers to all the physical parts of a computer that you can touch and see. Hardware is grouped into:
- Input Devices – Devices used to enter data (keyboard, mouse, microphone, scanner, webcam)
- Output Devices – Devices that display or produce results (monitor, printer, speakers, projector)
- Processing Devices – Where the computer thinks! (CPU – Central Processing Unit)
- Storage Devices – Where data is saved (HDD, SSD, USB drive, memory card)
- Memory (RAM) – Temporary working space while the computer runs programs
Software – The Mind of the Computer
Software is the set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. Unlike hardware, you cannot physically touch software. There are two main types:
- System Software – Manages the computer itself. Example: Windows, macOS, Android, iOS
- Application Software – Programs for specific tasks. Example: Microsoft Word, Chrome, WhatsApp, games
Look around your computer lab. With your partner, identify and list:
- 3 input devices you can see
- 2 output devices in the room
- Where the CPU is located (inside the computer case)
- Any storage devices (USB drives, SD cards)
🏠 Home Task: At home (or on your phone), go to Settings and find out how much RAM your device has and what operating system it uses. Write it down and share with the class.

The Keyboard
The keyboard is your main input device for typing text. It has different types of keys:
- Alphanumeric Keys – Letters (A–Z) and numbers (0–9)
- Function Keys – F1 through F12 at the top, used for special functions
- Navigation Keys – Arrow keys, Page Up/Down, Home, End
- Special Keys – Shift, Caps Lock, Tab, Enter, Backspace, Delete, Ctrl, Alt
Essential Keyboard Shortcuts
- Ctrl + C – Copy selected text/file
- Ctrl + V – Paste copied content
- Ctrl + X – Cut selected content
- Ctrl + Z – Undo last action
- Ctrl + S – Save document
- Ctrl + A – Select all content
- Alt + F4 – Close application
The Mouse
- Left Click – Select an item or click a button
- Right Click – Open a context menu (options menu)
- Double Click – Open a file or application
- Scroll Wheel – Scroll up and down on a page
- Click and Drag – Move files or select multiple items
Open Notepad (or any text editor) and type the following sentence 5 times as fast as you can:
"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
This sentence contains every letter of the alphabet! Time yourself on each attempt. Did you get faster?
Shortcut Master: Open a new document and practice using Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+Z, and Ctrl+S without looking them up.

Operating Systems & File Management

What is an Operating System?
An Operating System (OS) is the software that manages all hardware and software on your computer. Common operating systems include Windows (Microsoft), macOS (Apple), Android (Google), and iOS (Apple). Without an OS, the computer is just metal and circuits!
The Windows Desktop
- Desktop – The main screen you see after logging in
- Taskbar – The bar at the bottom with the Start menu and open apps
- Start Menu – Where you find and open all your programs
- File Explorer – Used to browse, open, move, and manage your files
- Recycle Bin – Temporary storage for deleted files (they're not gone yet!)
File Management
Good file management means keeping your files organized so you can find them easily. Best practices:
- Use folders to group related files together
- Use clear file names (e.g., "Math_Assignment_March.docx" not "file1.docx")
- Regularly delete files you no longer need
- Always know where you saved a file before closing it

What is the Internet?
The internet is a massive global network of computers connected together. When your computer connects to the internet, it can communicate with millions of other computers worldwide. The internet carries information in the form of data packets at incredible speed.
Important Internet Terms
- Website – A collection of web pages belonging to one address (e.g., google.com)
- URL – Uniform Resource Locator — the web address (e.g., https://www.zeeqtech.com)
- Browser – Software used to view websites (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari)
- Search Engine – A website that helps you find other websites (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo)
- HTTP/HTTPS – The protocol (rules) for transferring web pages. HTTPS is the secure version (look for 🔒)
- Wi-Fi – Wireless internet connection
- Bandwidth/Data – The amount of data you can transfer over the internet
Smart Searching
To find information effectively on Google:
- Use specific keywords — "capital of Nigeria" not just "capital"
- Use quotation marks for exact phrases — "Zeeqtech Academy"
- Check multiple sources — never trust just one website
- Look at the website address — .gov and .edu sites are usually more reliable

Protecting yourself online and being a responsible digital citizen
Digital Safety – Protecting Yourself Online
Being safe online is just as important as being safe in the physical world. Here are the key rules:
- Never share your full name, home address, phone number, or school name with strangers online
- Use strong passwords – combine letters, numbers, and symbols. Never use "12345" or your name!
- Never click on suspicious links or pop-up ads — they could be scams or viruses
- Tell a trusted adult if something online makes you uncomfortable
- Log out of accounts when using shared computers
What is a Computer Virus?
A computer virus is a harmful program that can damage your computer, steal your data, or spread to other computers. Protect yourself by: installing antivirus software, not opening unknown email attachments, and not downloading from untrusted sites.
Digital Citizenship
Being a good digital citizen means behaving responsibly and respectfully online, just like in real life:
- Treat others with respect online — no cyberbullying
- Think before you post — once something is online, it's very hard to remove
- Respect copyright — don't copy and claim others' work as your own
- Use screen time wisely — balance online and offline activities

What is Word Processing?
Word processing software lets you create, edit, format, and print text documents. Microsoft Word and Google Docs are the most popular word processors. Businesses, schools, and individuals use them every day to create letters, reports, essays, and more.
Key Features of Microsoft Word
- Font Formatting – Change font type, size, colour, bold, italic, underline
- Paragraph Alignment – Left, Center, Right, Justify
- Lists – Bullet points and numbered lists
- Insert – Add images, tables, shapes, and page numbers
- Spell Check – Automatically highlights spelling errors
- Save & Print – Save as .docx or .pdf, and print documents

What is a Spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet is a program that organizes data in rows and columns (like a table). It can perform calculations automatically using formulas. Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets are the most popular spreadsheet programs.
Key Spreadsheet Concepts
- Cell – The individual box where you enter data (identified by column+row, e.g., A1, B5)
- Row – Horizontal line of cells (numbered 1, 2, 3...)
- Column – Vertical line of cells (lettered A, B, C...)
- Formula – A calculation that starts with = (e.g., =A1+B1, =SUM(A1:A10))
- Chart – A visual graph created from spreadsheet data

Digital Art & Graphic Design Basics
MS Paint, Canva intro, and digital creativity
What is Digital Art?
Digital art is any creative work made or presented using digital technology. This includes digital drawings, photo editing, graphic design, animation, and more. Digital artists use tools like MS Paint, Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and GIMP.
Starting with MS Paint
- MS Paint is a basic drawing program included with Windows
- Tools include: pencil, brush, shapes, fill colour, text, and eraser
- Great for practicing basic digital drawing and design concepts
Introduction to Canva
Canva (canva.com) is a free online design tool that lets you create posters, flyers, cards, and social media graphics using ready-made templates. It's used by businesses and students worldwide!
Using Canva (canva.com — free account with school email) or MS Paint:
- Design a poster for an upcoming school event
- Include: Event name, date, time, location
- Use at least 2 colours and 1 image/graphic
- Keep text clear and readable
- Save and share with your tutor

What is Email?
Email (Electronic Mail) is a method of sending messages digitally over the internet. It's one of the most important professional communication tools in the world. Popular email services include Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook.
Parts of an Email
- To: The recipient's email address
- CC: Carbon Copy — others who should receive the email
- Subject: A brief description of what the email is about
- Body: The main message content
- Attachment: Files sent with the email (documents, images)
- Signature: Your name, title, and contact info at the bottom
